In Austria an indicator system for the monitoring of sustainable development was worked out, based on a systematic approach. The development process, the framework on which the indicator set relies, possible applications of this framework and the selection of indicators including the use of the statistical data base will be presented.

Results of indicator reports and detailed evaluations of some indicators will be shown to illustrate the Austrian approach.
